Michael Jung (GER) was in a class of his own in the Dressage arena at the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships at Malmö (SWE) today, effortlessly taking the lead on an outstanding mark of 28.8 with his exciting new team ride Halunke FBW. The defending European Champion was awarded a 10 for his riding from Christian Landolt (SUI), the judge at B, and has a significant eight-penalty advantage over second-placed William Fox-Pitt (GBR).

The stage is set for a memorable HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships as some of the greatest talents in the sport gather in the unique seaside setting of Malmö, Sweden. This is the first time since the biennial Championships began 60 years ago that it has been held in Sweden, a nation with a proud Eventing heritage, and clearly a superb effort has been made to produce a relaxed yet beautifully presented event.

Eventing, the second in the 2013 series of test events for next year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™, finished in Caen (FRA) today with victory for Italy’s Vittoria Panizzon and Merlots Magic, winners of the Irish CCI2* at Ballindenisk last September. The Italian Air Force rider, who celebrates her 30th birthday next month, led after Dressage and held on to the top spot overnight with a classical Cross Country clear round on Pierre Michelet’s 26-fence track that made the most of the spectacular countryside at Haras du Pin.

There were emotional scenes when Andrew Nicholson and Mr Cruise Control triumphed at Luhmühlen, presented by DHL Paket, the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™.It was the 51-year-old New Zealander’s fourth CCI4* victory in a year, but the first for his long-time loyal owners, Robin and Nicky Salmon, who have often seen their striking-looking grey gelding come close to major honours without ever taking the big prize.

Andrew Nicholson (NZL) opened and closed Cross Country day with two perfect rides and is now in the lead on Mr Cruise Control, the last horse on the course at Luhmühlen, presented by DHL Paket, the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™.Nicholson is also sixth on the pathfinder Rathmoyle King, but he got soaked in the middle of the day when Qwanza fell on landing in the influential first water complex, fence 4.

Ingrid Klimke (GER) and her black gelding Tabasco TSF made a perfect picture as they took the lead after Dressage at Luhmühlen, presented by DHL Paket, the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics™.Klimke, who sets the standard for the Dressage phase in Eventing, earned a mark of 34.0. The 45-year-old, who finished fourth in the Freestyle at last week’s German National Dressage Championships, has a 2.7-point lead over another expert in the field, Lucinda Fredericks (AUS) on last year’s runner-up, Flying Finish.

All eyes will be on Andrew Nicholson (NZL) this weekend as he heads for the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event (USA) on 25-28 April to try to extend his lead in the HSBC FEI Classics™ 2012/2013 series. Nicholson enjoyed a remarkable run of success last autumn, winning Burghley CCI4* (GBR), Blenheim CIC3* (GBR), Boekelo CCI3* (NED) and Pau CCI4* (FRA) in quick succession to take the world number one slot in the HSBC Rankings.

The German team produced yet another excellent performance to score victory at Fontainebleau (FRA), the first leg of the FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing 2013, and seem to be carrying on their winning ways from last year, when they took four out of six competitions in the inaugural series.

Three members of the German Olympic gold medal team are heading to the Complet International de Fontainebleau (FRA) this weekend, where the opening leg of the second FEI Nations Cup™ Eventing test series will take place (21-24 March).

The FEI Bureau has approved the Eventing Committee’s proposal to update (fine-tune) the athletes qualification and categorization Eventing Rules Article 519 & 520 with immediate implementation.
