Area V has lost a dear friend and long time volunteer last week, Jackie High. Jackie was a volunteer coordinator at Holly Hill for many years.  She died after a courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer on July 13th.   Services celebrating the life of Jackie were held Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Bossier City, LA.  Jackie requested that instead of flowers she would like donations to be sent to the Cypress Zoo and Wildlife Rescue Center in Benton, LA.

It is with sadness that the USEA announces that Greystone’s Harley, a nine-year-old chestnut gelding, collapsed and died of a pulmonary hemorrhage between fences on the Preliminary course at Chattahoochee Hills Horse Trials early Sunday  morning. Temperatures were in the low 70 degrees and conditions were optimal.

This has been a very difficult week for us in West Grove.  The main tragedy has been the horrible fire at True Prospect Farm which has affected many in our community and beyond.  To add to all that, Phillip and I are saying goodbye to my wonderful “Doc”.

Australian equestrian legend James George “Bill” Roycroft OBE passed away on Sunday 29 May at the age of 96.Bill Roycroft was one of Australia’s greatest Olympians and one of only five Australians to have competed in five consecutive Olympic Games.His Olympic début was in Rome in 1960 where he helped secure Australia’s first-ever equestrian medal - team gold in Eventing.

Julia Kelly of Chicago, Illinois, who passed away on Sunday, May 8, at the age of 67 was well known to riders who competed at Rebecca Farm in Kalispell, Montana.  Julie and her husband Ed were long-time sponsors of all the awards presented to competitors at The Event at Rebecca Farm, many of whom are now the proud owners of the beautiful glass art pieces so generously provided by Julie.

Sam Barr, founder of the Welton Stud and famous for all the Welton event horses he bred died in Gloucester Hospital on Saturday April 30th, his health having deteriorated over the last three months.

Reno Tune was humanely euthanized due to complications to EPM on April 13, 2011; the liver chestnut gelding was 17.

The USEA regrets to announce that Mandar, ridden by Arden Wildasin and owned by her father James M. Wildasin was euthanized on Saturday following an incident on the Intermediate course at Southern Pines. Mandar, an Irish Sport Horse, was jumping well when he was pulled up by Arden on the flat between fences. The horse was transported back to the barn and was found to have fractured his hind fetlock. He was immediately euthanized. Mandar was 11-years-old and was successful at both the Preliminary and Intermediate levels and placed 11th at the Fair Hill CCI2* in 2010.

Gary and Donna Stegman of Poplar Place Farm Horse Trials and the competition officials would like to express their condolences to Jane Rusconi, owner, and Michael Pollard, rider, on the loss of Dekorum, a 9-year-old Thoroughbred mare. Michael and Dekorum were competing in the Advanced Division at the March Horse Trials, when Dekorum suffered an injury while approaching fence eight on the cross-country course. Dekorum was immediately tended to by qualified veterinarians. The decision was made to humanely euthanize Dekorum due to the extent of the injury.
