Now On Course

When first-time horse buyer Claudia Channing purchased Chestnut Oak’s Drummer Boy (Clononeer Romantic Traveler x Steege’s Beth) as an unbroken 3-year-old American-bred Gypsy Vanner/Shire cross gelding, it might have seemed like an unorthodox choice for a new rider. Affectionately knowns as “Romeo” around the barn, he has proven that he can be competitive at the lower levels of eventing. “[It was] quite the leap into horse ownership, but his quiet nature and willing attitude made for the perfect match,” reflected Taylor Lindsten, Romeo and Channing’s current trainer.

Last winter, the organizers of the Genesee Valley Riding and Driving Club Horse Trials made the decision last winter to offer a Modified division at our event in August. We run a small event and knew entries would be limited but felt that the quality of what we offer, combined with the novelty of being the first to do so in Area I, made it an attractive prospect. Plus, a few members had asked us to do it!

Simone Tranfaglia and Theresa Simmons were among the riders that made the two-day trip from Petaluma, California with trainer David Adamo to compete at the 2018 Event at Rebecca Farm. Seventeen-year-old Simone had been working hard for over a year to prepare to compete in her first ever USEA Classic Series Event, the Rebecca Farm Training Three-Day, with Maggie Bronson’s 21-year-old Westphalian gelding Finnegan’s Wake (Abdullah x Seren).

As a course designer, Morgan Rowsell is accustomed to watching hundreds of riders compete on the cross-country tracks he has created, but observing the riders on course at the Flora Lea Spring Horse Trials over Memorial Day weekend was a new experience for him. Why? Because one very special rider, his 8-year-old daughter, completed her very first USEA recognized event at Flora Lea.

My name is Cortney McDaniel, I am a 28-year-old 911 dispatcher for the North King County area in Washington state. We dispatch for six police agencies and 14 fire departments (56 fire stations). On average, we take about 700 calls a day. I started this career as a stepping stone to eventually become a police officer in the Seattle area and then becoming an officer on the equestrian mounted patrol division. After finding out that the Seattle mounted patrol is no longer, I decided to remain as a dispatcher at NORCOM.

When Alexa Lapp started working for eventer Jennie Brannigan in 2012, the plan was to help out for a month or two until Brannigan found full-time help. Lapp traveled from her home in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Ocala, Florida in the winter of her Junior year of high school, having finished a substantial amount of school credit in her Freshman and Sophomore years and completing her schooling with a combination of on-campus and online courses. Six years later Lapp is still working for Brannigan and their partnership has opened up opportunities for the 19-year-old Young Rider.

There is a new face on the Florida event scene this winter – 27-year-old Swiss eventer, Felix Vogg, who is based in Radolfzell, Germany – just north of the German-Swiss border. Vogg is no stranger to international eventing having competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, 2014 World Equestrian Games, and multiple European Championships, but Rocking Horse Winter II in Ocala, Florida was his first foray into U.S. eventing.
