The SmartPak Equine USEA Training Three-Day at the Colorado Horse Park drew only four entries, but competition was still fierce as only half the division finished the weekend. 15-year-old Hailey Patno traveled from Wyoming to compete with her 15-year-old Appendix mare, Syncotina (Syncospin x Keegans Doc) and made the journey well worth it by finishing on her dressage score of 39.3 to take the blue ribbon.
The pair started the T3D in third place after dressage, but moved up after the second placed rider withdrew before Endurance Day. Hailey and ‘Tina’ kept their position following Endurance Day, but when the leader accumulated four show jumping and two time penalties Hailey and Tina led the victory gallop.
“I did the T3D at Rebecca Farm in July, and it was a blast,” said Hailey. “I want to move up to Preliminary and the T3Ds have given me the extra challenge that will prepare me for the next level. Besides that, the long format is so much fun. It gave me the opportunity to experience trot ups, roads and tracks, and steeplechase.”
As is the norm with many Classic Format Competitors, Hailey found steeplechase to be her favorite part of the weekend. “I have a horse that loves to run and jump and to do steeplechase is a great thrill and is unlike anything else I have ever done. I had great rides all around and the T3D at the Colorado Horse Park was an awesome way to end the season.”
Hailey plans to move Tina, who she calls the partner of a lifetime, up to Preliminary level next Spring and hopes to compete at the Adequan FEI North American Junior/Young Riders Championships as a member of the Area IX team.
“[Tina] is a very talented event horse and has taught me so much, and I believe she will continue to teach me until the last day I ride her,” said Hailey. “She loves her job, especially the cross-country; she is a cross-country machine. I can trust her to take care of me all of the time. She has given me so much confidence. She is the best partner and I cannot imagine competing on any other horse right now.”
Hailey was awarded an array of other prizes in addition to her first place ribbon. For her T3D win at the Colorado Horse Park, Hailey took home a Five Star Tack Bridle, a SmartPak Wellfleet Halter and engraved lead, a pair of FITS Breeches, and a $200 Point Two Gift Certificate. She was also entered in a drawing to win a Stackhouse Saddle, a year’s supply of SmartPaks, and a Fleeceworks Saddle Pad Set.
Second place went to 15-year-old Claire Jan and Artistic Flair, a 9-year-old Morgan gelding (HDK Viberance x Crown Tapestry). The pair took home a $100 Point Two Gift Certificate for their finish in the T3D.
